LITTLE ELK LAKOTA SCHOOL
Welcome to the Little Elk Lakota School page! The teacher for this school is David Little Elk, a certified Lakota Language & Culture Teacher.
A crisis has now begun to unfold among the Lakota nations, as many of the fluent Lakota Elder speakers are now few in number, and many of the younger Lakota are losing interest to learn the Lakota language and culture. As a result, the Lakota language and culture are fast becoming extinct. Thus, David has created the Little Elk Lakota School. He has also developed a unique user-friendly Lakota Language course, and has also written a Lakota Culture book, which are all used in many Lakota Sioux tribal schools. As of August 2002, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Council has proclaimed David's Lakota Language course to be the OFFICIAL Lakota Language Course of the tribe. Since then, all tribal and B.I.A. schools within the tribe's borders will now be using this course. Schools from tribes in other parts of the United States are also now using this course, as well. Now it is possible for interested persons to achieve a Lakota Language Certificate and a Lakota Thought & Philosophy Certificate from an online Lakota School. Thus, David teaches the Lakota language and culture from THE LAKOTA PERSPECTIVE.
There are four levels of Lakota language courses in this online school. Successful completion of all four levels symbolizes a measure of fluency in speaking, reading and writing the Lakota language. Each level consists of sixteen (16) two hour lessons, and the lessons can be held via any messenger program with a headset. Each two hour lesson costs 60.00 US Dollars, and will be held once a week. If the student feels like adding more lessons within a level program, this is possible, as well, at the same price of 60.00 US Dollars per two hour lesson.
LAKOTA LANGUAGE ON SECOND LIFE
All four levels of Lakota Language courses can also be completed in Second Life. Completing the courses in Second Life allows the students more visual aids, as well as voice-chat features so that students may speak directly with David. This makes it possible for the students to complete vocal exercises and oral examinations. The prices for completing the courses on Second Life are the same as they are when completing the courses using a messenger program. Please note that there is free membership offered on Second Life. Thus, lesson payments are made directly to David and not to Second Life. Before enrolling in this school, students must first purchase the Cante Etanhan Owoglake book and 7 CD set, as these are the course materials for all four levels. These materials can be ordered at THE MALAKOTA CATALOG.
LAKOTA CERTIFICATE COURSE MATERIALS
The course materials consist of David's Lakota language book titled "CANTE ETANHAN OWOGLAKE", which means "speaking from the heart", and 7 CD's, which have been recorded by David in his recording studio. As stated previously, these course materials will be used for all four levels of Lakota Language programs in this school. Thus, these course materials only have to be purchased once. However, if the student loses his/her materials, he/she will have to purchase them again. These materials can be ordered by clicking here or on this Course Materials Fee link. David says all of the sounds, words and sentences on each CD, and there is time on each CD for the student to repeat what he says. This method helps the student to pronounce the language correctly, in which the student will learn where the accents of the words and sentences are located, as well. Thus, the student will also hear and learn the musicality of the Lakota language from the CD's.
The CD’s also feature dialogs, in which the student learns the part of one speaker and David is the other speaker on the CD. On the CD’s, David begins the conversation and space is given on the CD for the student to respond to David’s questions; thus, creating a dialog between David and the student. Afterwards, the student learns David’s part of the dialog, after which space is given on the CD for the student to ask the questions and then David responds on the CD; thus, creating another conversation between the student and David. Hence, these CD’s are interactive. Each program number on the CD's can be programmed on any CD player to repeat as many times as the student desires.
This Lakota language book is very extensive and has been recently expanded to include new advanced dialogs and more Lakota words added. It is developed especially for those who know nothing about the language. This book also contains cultural information that reinforce the language concepts. Since this book is also used by Lakota language teachers in tribal universities and schools, this aspect reveals that since these materials can be used on any level. This one-to-one instruction provides more clear and concise pronunciation of words and sentences. The students will learn to dialog in Lakota while studying in this program. Lakota cultural concepts will also be discussed during the lessons because language & culture are not separable. Lakota culture reinforces the power and beauty of the Lakota language, and vice versa. The Little Elk Lakota School is an online school and is not accreditated with any other schools or associations.

This Certificate symbolizes a deep understanding and appreciation of Lakota Thought & Philosophy, which is the foundation of Lakota Spirituality. To achieve this Certificate from the Little Elk Lakota School requires the following:
- Students must purchase the course book for this course, which is titled "Wicoh'an Otehike", and can be ordered at THE MALAKOTA CATALOG
- Students must pay the tuition fee of $200.00
- Students must provide David with a contact address so that he may send exams to the them, as they progress in this course. This means the students and David will be in contact with each other via email or regular mail throughout the students' course of study. There will also be discussions via email or one of the online messenger programs.
- Students must successfully complete all exams.
The time limit for successful completion of this course is 1 year from the shipping date of the course materials.
LAKOTA THOUGHT & PHILOSOPHY COURSE MATERIALS
 David has written a book titled "WICOH'AN OTEHIKE - the difficult path". This book contains an account of Lakota Creation and also includes Lakota Star Knowledge stories, as well as commentary on current issues facing contemporary Lakota Society. These commentaries are based on ancient Lakota Thought & Philosophy.
This collection of writings was originally written for his family. However, upon becoming a Lakota Language & Culture teacher, his students became like an extension of his extended family. Thus, he began to share these teachings with his students, as well. After a time, he began to share some of these teachings online so that other Lakota who have grown up outside of their culture may also learn from it by offering this book for sale. This has resulted into something akin to a doorway leading to home for many people. This is an account of Lakota Reality.
